The Way She Churned Butter
cedar chest
estate sale
the price we put
on things
my grandmother’s story
sepia photo
her smile doesn’t reach
her eyes
about each quilt scrap
underwear drawer
the gun we didn’t know
she had

Empty Mug
Cooper’s hawk
the absence of birds
around the feeder
unsettled quiet
all my troubles seem
so far away
the vivid footage
of bombed cities
so small
fallen plum blossoms
my place in the world
no longer certain
